Job Overview

The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO), in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer, is responsible for ensuring the safety of the nursing unit(s)/hospitals. They direct all nursing service activities for the assigned hospital by making staffing recommendations, ensuring adequate staff for appropriate nursing care, serving as a liaison between staff and administration, promoting staff productivity, and developing and implementing nursing service policies and procedures in compliance with PAM Health system policies and accreditation standards. This is an exempt position and may require evening work.

Responsibilities

  • Nursing Services Responsibilities
    • Plans, organizes, schedules, and delegates work effectively.
    • Assures compliance with current care standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Assists in implementing and evaluating the care delivery system on the nursing unit.
    • Sets an example for other staff through responsibility for professional growth, team meetings, and participation in learning activities.
    • Assumes responsibility for assigned nursing unit, makes changes in shift assignments as needed, and supports cost-effective quality nursing.
    • Participates in performance improvement activities and guides and disciplines nursing staff when necessary.
    • Provides guidance and discipline as necessary for nursing staff during designated shifts.
    • Evaluates subordinates and seeks administrative review before presenting salary increases.
    • Supports interdisciplinary team model and facilitates nursing participation in goal setting and program evaluation.
    • Assures accurate charge capture and compliance with policies and procedures.
    • Acts as the primary nurse administrator in the absence of the CNO/DON.
  • Education Responsibilities
    • Defines and oversees orientation, education, and training of licensed and unlicensed staff.
    • Coaches, mentors, and provides developmental opportunities for nursing staff.
    • Assists nursing personnel in utilizing the nursing process and ensures continuity of care.
    • Responsible for restraint education.
  • Infection Control Responsibilities
    • Assures coordination of the hospital-wide infection control program.
    • Initiates and evaluates infection control policies and procedures.
    • Monitors compliance with infection control policies, regulations, and guidelines.
    • Facilitates monitoring of infectious diseases, mode of transmission, and recommended treatment.
    • Educates employees on handwashing, standard precautions, and other infection control information.
    • Participates in hospital educational programs on health, safety, and infection control.
    • Assures appropriate reporting activities.
  • Employee Health Responsibilities
    • Assures coordination of the hospital-wide employee health program.
    • Initiates and evaluates employee health policies and procedures.
    • Monitors compliance with employee health policies, regulations, and guidelines.
    • Maintains employee health record system.
    • Assists with assessment and management of employees with exposure incidents.
    • Assures appropriate reporting activities.

Requirements

  • Education and Training:
    • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State where the hospital resides.
    • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of three to five years of clinical nursing experience required.
    • Prior management experience preferred.
  • Certifications:
    • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required.
    • Nursing specific certification (e.g., CNE, CRRN, CCRN, or PCCN) preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.
    • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
    • Clinical, leadership, and management skills.
    • Ability to relate to people and establish support.
    • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities.
