What does a Vocational Psychologist do?
There are nearly as many jobs in the world as there are people to perform them. That means Vocational Psychologists have a lot of work on their hands. Vocational Psychologists are fascinated by the hows, whats, and whys related to people and their jobs. As a Vocational Psychologist, you study employee performance on production lines, evaluate ways to improve job satisfaction, and help people make life-altering career changes.
Your relationship with your patient might begin through a company-sponsored employee assistance or job placement program, in a clinic, hospital, or rehabilitation facility. However you are introduced, your patient is usually facing some sort of change. Perhaps an injury has forced him to leave the only industry he’s ever known. Or maybe she was recently divorced and needs to move back into the working sector after years of unemployment.
After discussing feelings and goals with the patient, you administer assessments that help them identify their strengths and weaknesses. This process opens up doors of opportunity they may have never considered. You provide information about schooling, financing, and job outlooks that give them direction and hope.
In addition to job placement, you also counsel patients about job satisfaction. You find out the core of the issue, offer possible solutions and advice, and provide resources where applicable. You also help with inter-employee conflicts, communication breakdowns between management and workers, and team building and leadership training.
With all of these options, it’s no surprise that a career as a Vocational Psychologist is a very interesting one. Thanks to you, employees view their jobs with optimism and even pleasure.
