Set up and operate closed-die forging machines.
What does an Upsetter do?
Sets up and operates closed-die forging machine equipped with horizontal ram and gripping die to expand end of hot metal bar stock: Aligns and bolts specified dies and cams in machine, using rule, square, and wrenches. Pulls stock from furnace when color indicates forging temperature and inserts stock in gripping die against stop gauge, using tongs or hoist. Presses pedal to close gripping die on stock and to advance ram, squeezing end of metal into gripping die cavity. Moves workpiece through series of dies to shape stock progressively to specifications. Verifies dimensions of forged piece, using set gauges. May set up and operate closed-die forging machine to expand end of cold metal.
