What does a Tool Design Engineer do?
Most Engineers design something at some point in their careers, but Tool Design Engineers make it their specific focus. Whether you love working with raw power, sorting out the intricate details, or embracing the spark of creativity, being a Tool Design Engineer gives you a chance to follow your love every day. Using your in-depth knowledge of mechanical and industrial engineering, you design the devices that make work happen.
Engineers solve problems. As a Tool Design Engineer, you gather information and read detailed reports about a given problem: “Lift X pounds of steel Y feet vertically,” or “Move B number units C feet in D seconds.” Your brain is one of your most important tools for solving these problems, but you also have to interact with a team of other Engineers, Technologists, and Technicians to get the whole picture.
Once you’ve got all your data together, you start the design process. You have your own office or cubicle, but spend equal amounts of time in the laboratory or on the factory floor. Depending on your company, you could take trips to the field too.
As a Tool Design Engineer, you’re primarily concerned with understanding the application for the power-creating devices you design, and creating the tool that best fits those needs. Years of experience, and the ability to tap the expertise of teammates for input and insight, are both important in this job. One person can’t do it alone. Even if you have a leadership position, your teammates will be an important resource for you to do the best job possible.
You work closely with Tool Engineers who are in charge of implementing your new inventions or improvements. Expect constantly changing work that challenges your skills, and forces you to grow and adapt.
