What does a Routing Clerk do?
As a Routing Clerk, you sort packages, boxes, or other deliveries so that they are organized and ready for shipment. When the Delivery Driver shows up for work, he or she expects the stuff to be all set for delivery. And it’s your job to make sure that it is.
A Mail Sorter is one type of Routing Clerk. In this position, you work in the back of the post office, sorting letters by zip code and street address so that they land in the slot of the particular Mail Carrier who will deliver them.
A Package Handler is another type of Routing Clerk. In this role, you might work for any business that has large quantities of packages to send out.
Imagine the back room of Amazon. Someone has to move all those completed orders through the warehouse and into the hands of the Truck Driver who will take them to their next destination. That someone is you.
Another common place of employment for a Routing Clerk is with nonprofit organizations, such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Habitat for Humanity. This job is a little different because you actually organize the route rather than the packages. After you receive a list of donations to be picked up, you peruse a map of the area, pinpoint the delivery addresses, and create a route for the pick-up Driver.
