Music Composer

Write music scores for orchestras, operas, or single instruments.

What does a Music Composer do?

A music composer needs a formal education in music, and must know how to play one or more instruments. This is a highly competitive area requiring patience and networking skills. Many composers work in the movie and television fields, in which you are required to create musical scores and soundtracks. You might also write classical music for operas or live shows. Some composers conduct orchestras or teach music.

Good composers have mastery over multiple instruments, are able to write scores quickly, and are knowledgeable about various styles and forms of music. There are both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music composition that cover topics including music history, music theory, and techniques. A proper background in music can provide a strong foundation or a successful career.
