Order materials and ensure they are delivered at just the right moment.
What does a Material Expediter do?
A Material Expediter is obsessed with getting the timing just right. Having the right raw materials on hand at just the right time means your company doesn’t have to pay for large storage facilities or for stock it isn’t using. It also means the crews can keep working. This can help your company save money, run efficiently, and stay in business.
As a Material Expediter, you’re primarily responsible for ordering materials. You inspect the materials when they arrive, and make sure the delivered items match what you’ve ordered. Placing an order often involves a significant amount of paperwork and as a Material Expediter you’ll need a good system so you can keep track of that paperwork and continue to see the top of your desk.
You maintain an inventory for your company, making sure you know how much stock you have on hand and exactly where you have it stored. You inspect your inventory from time to time to ensure that it isn’t damaged in any way.
If you work for a construction company, you keep in touch with the workers so you know exactly how much to order. You need to know, for example, how much roofing material they need, and when they want it delivered. You also need to find out when they’re ready to install windows, and make sure those windows are delivered by the due date. But, you won’t want them delivered too early, or they may be broken by falling roofing materials.
