What does a Geological Statistician do?
Most of us look at a group of research data and see, well, numbers. But a Geological Statistician looks at that same material and sees patterns, connections, and information. When you’re a Geological Statistician, the ” Statistician ” part of your title is all about the numbers. You understand complex mathematical computations, and know how to use specialized computer programs that process raw data into usable information. The “Geological” part of your title means that you perform this work on data pertaining to the physical elements of Earth.
Obviously, a Geological Statistician job is not for everyone. You must have an analytical mind, a passion for all things science, and an acute understanding of math. With this knowledge, you help Business Owners and governments understand our natural resources better. To do this, you gather research data from a variety of resources. Then you evaluate those data, looking for patterns in them. To confirm your hypothesis, you perform calculations. Once you’ve verified your theory, you create graphs, charts, diagrams, models, reports, and/or presentations that visually organize and explain the complex information in easy-to-read formats.
For example, using current data, it might appear that the presence of diamonds is scattered and unpredictable in a certain area. But what seems sporadic to someone else looks like an easily recognizable pattern to you. With your expert understanding of how diamonds are created, you notice a predictable appearance across a region, which then gives the mining company an area of focus. You use this same technique to assist in conservation efforts and solve natural resource problems.
