What does a Food Service Worker do?
A conduit between hungry people and food—that’s the job of a Food Service Worker. Most food establishments offer a variety of positions, all falling under the Food Service Worker title. These include Waiter, Prep Cook, Head Chef, and Restaurant Manager amongst others, and each has different responsibilities with a common goal: get food from the kitchen to people in the restaurant.
In the kitchen, Prep Cooks and Chefs are responsible for—you guessed it—preparing food for customers. The Chef’s job is a bit more involved as he gets to create new recipes and decide what will be served. Creative thinking, along with a flair for understanding how foods complement each other, is essential in this Food Service Worker position.
Keeping the menu fresh is one way to keep customers coming back. Prep Cooks and Line Cooks follow the guidance of the Head Chef, completing important steps in the process such as chopping vegetables and preparing ingredients.
Servers, Bartenders, and Managers all work directly with customers in what’s called the “front of the house,” commonly known as the dining room. The Manager is charged with maintaining appropriate staffing, overseeing the overall budget, and ensuring that all aspects of the restaurant are working together like a well-oiled machine.
Food Servers and Bartenders interact with customers, taking orders, delivering food and beverages, and attending to their dining needs. Personality is essential for these vital positions, because the attitude of a Server or Bartender often shapes the overall restaurant experience of the customer.
