What does a Director of Corporate Development do?

A company is like a ship, and while you-the Director of Corporate Development-aren’t the Captain, you can help navigate. Working with other senior management players, especially the CEO, the Director of Corporate Development helps determine the course that the business will take. Next, you coordinate your efforts with those of your support team to move the company in line with those goals.

Being a Director of Corporate Development means having a big toolbox of duties, and never being afraid to get into the thick of things and finish tasks yourself, but only when necessary. You are a leader, a networker, a problem solver, and above all, a communicator. Your personality, persistence, and winning smile are your best weapons. The relationships you build with your in-house support team, and various corporate and government partners around the country and even around the world, combine to be the wind in the sails of the ship that is your company.

Corporate development is all about knowing the right people and building relationships. You work a standard eight-hour day (or longer) in an office. Regular trips to meet with new or existing partners, attend functions where more support can be gathered, and make presentations or give public speeches may also be part of the job, before, during, or after business hours.

You have a Secretary or support person to help you manage your schedule, but it’s also incumbent on you to manage your time and multiple priorities for maximum effect. You have vacations and normal time off, but when you’re on the job, you’re a one-person show with a lot to do. Communicating effectively in person, in writing, as well as via phone, text, and email is vital.
