What does a Diesel Retrofit Designer do?
A Diesel Retrofit Designer creates the emission control devices used in diesel retrofits. What’s a diesel retrofit? It’s a special strategy developed by Engineers to maximize the pros and minimize the cons of diesel engines.
You see, diesel engines are dirty. While they add a little more oomph to motor vehicles, that oomph comes at a cost: Although they’re reliable, fuel-efficient, and high in torque, diesel engines also emit high amounts of environmental pollutants into the atmosphere.
When you’re a Diesel Retrofit Designer, the emission control devices you design range from diesel oxidation catalysts that convert pollutants into nontoxic gases by way of chemical oxidation to diesel particulate filters that remove pollutants from exhaust by filtering it.
A type of Mechanical Engineer, you’re employed by engineering firms and engine manufacturers. Working with the likes of Mechanics, Machinists, and Air Quality Engineers, you make diesel-powered vehicles, machines, and equipment-including trucks, buses, vans, trains, tractors, bulldozers, excavators, and graders-more environmentally friendly. Like most Engineers, Diesel Retrofit Designers work with Drafters to develop structural designs and specifications related to the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of emission control devices. Along with design, you’re also responsible for research, planning, budgeting, testing, and problem solving.
