What does a Cosmetic Dermatologist do?

Loving the skin you’re in gets a little trickier when an outbreak of acne or a maze of wrinkles arrives to rain on your parade. Cosmetic Dermatologists specialize in treating skin conditions that affect how a person looks and feels about themselves, not those which pose significant health risks. Cosmetic Dermatologists’ weapons include everything from prescription pimple cream to laser surgery to Botox.

A typical day for a Cosmetic Dermatologist starts with an examination and diagnosis of a patient’s problem. You suggest the best option that involves the least invasive procedure possible. While a woman could use Botox to fight wrinkles, cutting down on cigarettes and using a prescription anti-wrinkle cream might do the trick without unwanted side effects.

On those days when you’re not in the office with patients, you perform surgical procedures. Laser surgery and liposuction are among the most popular, but there are many others besides these. One day, you’re removing warts, and the next, it’s unwanted tattoos.

Above all, it’s up to you to be sure each patient understands their treatment options, along with the pros and cons of each. Liposuction and laser surgery can do wonders for certain patients, but they must be willing to make a long-term commitment to caring for their bodies afterward. You make sure every patient is willing and ready to commit to changing their lives for the better so they can finally make peace with their self-image.
