Community Organizer

Community Organizers strive each day to improve their community by creating positive changes in the local government, businesses, and residential areas. A Community Organizer is basically a voice for people in the community who don’t have one. As Community Organizer, you make sure that social wrongs are set right, and that standards are put in place to enhance practices.

So how do you do all of this? Your role within the community may be unofficial, unpaid, and voluntary, or it may be an official city position. Either way, administrative tasks, leadership duties, and decision-making are all part of the job.

This means you hold a lot of meetings, gather feedback from concerned citizens, and relay that information to people who have a little more power to get the job done. You have to be a good listener in order to do this. Moreover, you have to know how and when to take action.

Racial equality among members of your community, the local economy, and sustainability for your region are all common concerns-ones you’ll be dealing with frequently. But perhaps the biggest responsibility of the job is taking the initiative. If you know of unfair practices and policies taking place in your community, then it is up to you to fix that situation, whether that is through appealing to the source, arguing your case, or speaking with your local government if all else fails.
