What does a Cider Maker do?
A Cider Maker is a Brewer who manufactures and sells hard cider, which is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented apple juice (think beer, only sweeter). If it’s true that an apple a day keeps the Doctor away, that means you’ve got to eat 365 apples to stay healthy throughout the year. Thanks to cider, along with apple pie, apple fritters, applesauce, and apple butter, there are dozens of ways to eat (and, in the case of cider, drink) them.
Often hobbyists-turned- Entrepreneurs, Cider Makers are typically people who have turned their passion into a career by transforming a basement brewery into a fully functional “cidery.” Usually, that requires a combination of business, agriculture, cooking, and science that manifests itself during the cider-making process, which involves harvesting apples, pressing them into juice, and blending different varieties of juice to achieve desired flavors. You also test the blended juice for the proper levels of sugar and acid, ferment the juice into alcoholic cider, and filter the cider to make it crystal clear. The final stage involves bottling the cider; storing the bottled cider until it’s ready for consumption, and, finally, marketing, distributing, and selling the finished product.
If you’re a Cider Maker for a small cidery, you probably oversee and execute the entire cider-making operation, from harvest to distribution. If your cidery is large, however, you probably own just one of the steps in the cider-making process. Either way, your job—quite literally—is sweet, refreshing, and maybe just a little bit intemperate.
