What does a Benefits Consultant do?

What is your dream job? If you could write up a list of the benefits you wish your job provided, it would probably include things like a huge paycheck, an awesome medical plan, fully paid retirement after six months, and copious quantities of vacation time. Well, that might be a bit of a stretch, but the reality is that many employees work for a company not only for the paycheck, but also for the benefits.

Benefits Consultants work with businesses to evaluate and formulate benefit plans that are both appealing to applicants and affordable for the company. For example, every company must offer worker’s compensation, social security, and unemployment benefits, but other flexible perks include vacation time, holiday pay, profit sharing, and cafeteria plans.

Every time a company posts a job listing, it has the power to decide which benefits they will offer the potential employee. It’s a careful balance; lack of health insurance could be a deal breaker for a high-quality candidate, but offering it could cost the company a small fortune. As a Benefits Consultant, you understand this and consistently work to balance it out.

Insurance plans are a major part of most benefit packages. Benefits Consultants are experts on what is available, and make suggestions based on the number of employees, plan costs, location, coverage, and many other factors. In addition to vision, dental, drug, disability, and medical coverage, you also help implement, change, or renew 401k, pension, and other retirement plans.
