Computer-aided design (CAD) is quickly becoming an indispensable tool in a variety of workplaces. What was once used mainly for architectural work has expanded into the planning stages for interior design, landscaping, shipbuilding, aerospace design, and many other fields. Today’s employers realize this and are on the lookout for employees who are trained in computer-aided design programs. Many will even pay existing employees to learn the skill.
CAD training is typically offered as part of a drafting program. However, if you’re only interested in the CAD portion of drafting, there are a variety of certificates that you can earn.
Do a little research online. It’s important that you find a program that works for you. Most programs require between one and 10 classes to complete. Some cram it all into a weekend, while others stretch it out over several months.

If you’re completing the CAD certificate as a work requirement, then congratulations, you can now ask for a raise! If you’re beginning your job hunt, there are a variety of entry-level positions available with a certificate. Throw a wide net during your job hunt because CAD knowledge meshes well with other experience or schooling that you might have.
For example, you can find work as an assistant to an Architect, or help create images for an automotive design team. You can put your skills to work in marketing or advertising, or you can even contribute to computer animation for movies.
