A cover letter sample is exactly that—a sample. Use this sample as inspiration but don’t copy it entirely. You never want to submit a cover letter that looks exactly the same as your competitor’s cover letter (or a cover letter sample you find online). You must differentiate yourself.
When you write a cover letter for an accounting role, here are some best practices:
- Be professional. Accounting is a high-stakes career. Use your letter to demonstrate your professionalism.
- Quantify your achievements. In accounting, numbers are superior. Integrate data throughout your cover letter.
- Emphasize your reliability. As a financial professional, reliability and trustworthiness are of utmost importance.
Many accounting roles require the following skills: prepare monthly statements, collect data, analyze and investigate variances, summarize findings, prepare budgets, and develop forecasts. All of these tasks support the financial decision-making of the organization and its bottom line.
Check out how to integrate these skills in the accounting cover letter sample below:

Dear Ms. Amy Hart,
When I discovered the open Accountant role with XYZ Company, I was excited by the opportunity to join your organization. In May 2016, I graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting from University College. I excel at collecting and analyzing data and have a proven ability to meet every deadline. My academic background, accounting experience, and analytical skills have prepared me well for this position.
Academic background. The following courses have equipped me with the skills to excel in this role with XYZ Company: Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Advanced Accounting, and Investment Risk.
Accounting experience. As an Accounting Intern my senior year of college, I processed accounts payable functions and assisted with month-end closing processes for a million-dollar company. This experience provided me with the skills and experience to effectively contribute as an accountant with XYZ Company.
Analytical skills. I also have experience creating monthly reports presenting variances of 45 ATMs. I excel at collecting and analyzing data—two skills that are integral to this role.
I am excited by the chance to contribute to your organization and have the skills needed to prepare and communicate financial information to leaders in your company. My enclosed resume expands on my experience. I would be thrilled to join your diverse team of professionals. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Alex Accounting
